On Trend: Maxi Duster + (My Top 3 Thrifting Tips)

Prior to starting my blog, I knew nothing about thrifting at all.  I was definitely a bargain shopper for sure but buying clothing second hand never crossed my mind.  Fast-forward to seven years later and some of my favorite pieces have come from thrift stores.  Thrifting is an amazing way to build your wardrobe if you are missing staple pieces or want to try new trends without breaking the bank.

For instance, I thrifted this crochet duster a few weeks ago.  Maxi dusters and kimonos are on my summer ’17 must have list. I was ecstatic when I found this beauty for $7.99 with no holes and only a few unnoticeable snags.  My new Chinese Laundry heeled sandals were the perfect match for this weekend wear outfit.

My Top 3 Thrifting Tips

1. Pay Attention to Quality – Scoring an amazing find while thrifting is such a rush.  I get that rush anytime I come across one of my favorite brands or a brand I wouldn’t normally be able to afford.  However, do let your excitement deter you from thoroughly checking the quality of an item.  Look for weird stains, snags, holes, missing buttons, etc.  Most thrift stores don’t allow returns.
2. Set a Spending Goal – Unless you are reselling your thrifted finds.  Set a spending goal for yourself.  I can go crazy when thrifting buying up everything. Only to get home and realize I don’t need half the stuff I picked up.  It’s easy to get caught in a frenzy when the prices are low and you are finding great items.  I usually bring cash with me and forgo using my debit card so I don’t over spend.
3. Take Your Time – I like to deep dive when I am thrifting.  That’s when I find the best items.  I’ve come up on some great pieces during my lunch break also.  However, I like to set aside a couple of hours especially if I am looking for current trends or work wear.

Bonus Tip: Don’t skip the accessories section.  The hidden gems (belts, purses, and clutches) are always at the bottom of the bins.
